![]() With a little experience, you’ll play faster than the dealer. Near-optimal play is very simple, and easy to master. So, to help out the fans of this game, I’m writing this basic strategy tutorial. Many of these mistakes cost 20% or more of the ante, or $1 of $5. Conversely, on the river, people frequently call with a bad kicker. On the flop, people check pairs, waiting to just call on the river. They’re very surprised to see me raise with J8s, or K5o. From what I’ve seen, people are very reluctant to raise pre-flop (4x) without a big pocket pair, or at least Ace + face. Granted, my site is the first to publish strategy for post-flop play, but I thought that people would instinctively figure it out. ![]() I find that people play quite differently from basic strategy. In my next post I might take a look at recreating the exercise using JavaScript.Basic Strategy Card for Ultimate Texas Hold'em. The closure accepts an integer representing the amount of cards to be dealt after burning a single card.Īnd here is how the simulation might look once the script has been run: I decided to create a reusable Closure for the deal action - since it will be done multiple times. By discarding first, no one can visibly see the outside of the next card so the theory is that they are deterred from cheating. Side note: this is done to deter cheating - if a card is "marked" somehow on the outside a certain player or players can have an unfair advantage in betting by looking at the top card of the deck. As stated earlier, before each round of community cards is dealt we must "burn" or discard a single card. ![]() Now we turn our attention towards the community cards. Since each player gets two cards, I do an outer loop for each card, and an inner loop for each player - each inner loop removing the first card from the array and placing it into the appropriate player's "hand": I decided upon an array of arrays for the player hands - the amount of arrays within the outer hands array represent each player. Next up we need to deal the "hole cards" for each player. Java gives us the Collections.shuffle() method, so let's use that: Now we have to "shuffle" the deck to randomize the cards within it. Then I loop over it and "join" the results to get the representation of a card Groovy gives us a really nice way to do this with its built in Collection methods so that part just takes creating a List that contains the cards and the suits and calling combinations() on it. It's not every day that you get to use emoji in your codebase, so I went "all in" on that approach. Yes, I did think that emoji were a perfectly valid solution in this case. So that was my starting point - create an array of suits and an array of cards and an empty array for the resulting deck: The obvious pattern in a deck of playing cards is that there are 4 different suits - hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds and 13 repeating cards (from Ace to King) in each deck. Obviously I could have simply created an array containing all of the 52 possible cards in a deck of playing cards, but being a programmer our first inclination is often to find patterns and use techniques to solve a problem instead of using "brute force". The first step in my mind was to build the deck. I'm not claiming this is the most efficient or "right" way to build a hold'em simulation, just how I completed the exercise. So now that we've explained the game, let's take a look at what I came up with. That's pretty much all there is to it - I won't get into betting or strategy here as that's beyond the scope of the discussion for these purposes. They can use any combination - use of the hole cards is not necessary to make their "best" hand. The players make their best five card poker hand using the seven cards - their two hole cards and the five community cards. A card is "burned" or discarded prior to each round of community cards. If you're not familiar with Texas Hold'em the game is pretty straightforward: 2 to 10 players each receive two down ("hole") cards and then five community cards are dealt face up in three stages: three at first (called the "flop"), then two rounds of one card (called the "turn" and the "river" respectively). Create a "deck" of cards, shuffle the cards, deal the cards to the players and deal out a set of community cards. My goal wasn't to come up with a full blown game, but something simple. Last week I had a bit of free time and decided to see how difficult it would be to write a Texas Hold'em poker simulation in Groovy. Studies have shown that merlins hunting shorebirds are in fact most successful when they’re pursuing individuals. ![]() By turning rapidly or simply tilting a bit on their axis, dunlins are able to shift the appearance of their plumage from dark (their upperparts) to light (their underparts), creating a swift flashing effect that might startle or confuse predators. That’s due in no small part to the bewildering things that an assemblage can do. Numerous studies have shown that individuals that travel in groups are almost always more vulnerable when they stray off by themselves. It’s when a predator lunges, though, that being in a crowd really pays off. More eyes and ears mean increased opportunities to find food and improved chances of detecting a predator in time. On one level it has long been obvious what’s going on when animals synchronize their movements-be they ducks, wildebeest, herring, or social insects. “There’s a lot we don’t know now,” says Heppner, “but I think we’re actually going to know how and why birds fly in organized groups within five years.” As a result, researchers are closer than ever to really getting inside the mind of the flock. So has a new wave of interest from other scientists, including mathematicians, physicists, even economists. ![]() Today, though, technological innovations, from high-speed photography to computer simulations, have enabled biologists to view and analyze bird flocks as never before. “The fact that we weren’t hooted out of town is an indication of how desperate we were to explain this stuff,” he says now. When Heppner, now semi-retired, began studying pigeon flocks more than 30 years ago, he suggested that they communicate through some sort of neurologically based “biological radio.” No wonder observers have been left groping for an explanation. Imagine doing unrehearsed evasive maneuvers in concert with all the other fast-moving drivers around you on an expressway, and you get an idea of the difficulty involved. Yet they can make astonishingly sharp turns that appear, to the unaided eye, to be conducted entirely in unison. They often fly at speeds of 40 miles or more per hour, and in a dense group the space between them may be only a bit more than their body length. But the most impressive flockers are arguably those that form large, irregularly shaped masses, such as starlings, shorebirds, and blackbirds. Pelicans, geese, and other waterfowl form lines and Vs, presumably to take advantage of aerodynamic factors that save energy. But only a relative handful really fly together, creating what University of Rhode Island biologist Frank Heppner, in the 1970s, proposed calling “flight flocks”: namely, highly organized lines or clusters. See this article's accompanying photo gallery What else can it be?” mused one British naturalist, rather plaintively, in 1931. Scientists of the early 20th century, perhaps almost as credulous, groped for such mysterious and even mystical concepts as “natural telepathy” or a “group soul.” “It is transfused thought, thought transference-collective thinking practically. The ancient Romans had their explanation: Gods, they believed, hinted at their intentions in the way birds flew. Since primeval times people have looked at masses of birds moving as one and wondered how they do it. A distant murmuration of starlings-and yes, that really is the marvelous term for a group of these often-maligned birds-10,000 or more, rolls “like a drunken fingerprint across the sky,” as the poet Richard Wilbur wrote, smudging the dusk horizon with the quickness of a pulsating jellyfish. A dark flock of dunlins sprints straight over a marsh-until a merlin appears and they all veer at the same moment, flashing their bright white underparts and rearranging their group into an hourglass shape with shocking swiftness. ![]() The focus on light is also a clever choice because it ties perfectly into Echoes of the Eye’s spookier vibe, often forcing you to wander through the dark and occasionally making light a luxury you desperately wish you could afford. It’s a neat little twist that sets how you navigate this area apart from the others, but it also maintains that same sense of wonder as things change in surprising ways at set times during each loop. That includes the rafts you’ll be riding between locations, which have orbs you can shine your flashlight on to float in a specific direction, as well as locked doors that open when illuminated. ![]() The bulk of this side adventure is basically a haunted river-rafting trip (which absolutely rules), with many of its puzzles and new mechanics built around using light. This setup does mean that Echoes of the Eye won’t have you bouncing around the solar system trying to piece together distant clues, which does make its discoveries a little more straightforward to unravel, but there are still plenty of intertwining secrets to find in this area alone. A new exhibit in the museum on Timber Hearth will point you toward a nearby research station monitoring a photo-taking satellite, and following that simple but exciting lead will eventually land you in a brand-new area with just as much to do as any of the base game’s planets.
